You Can Find Me in My Church is a short novel in which an eighteen-year-old girl, overwhelmed by the Climate Crisis and her own blighted future, meets an eighty-four-year-old retired history teacher who wonders whether she should bother to have a Pacemaker implanted.
“I should have a Pacemaker . . . so that after eighty-four years, I can watch the end of the world?”
The two orphans meet in a hospital room. Laila has attempted suicide; Birgitte knows she may not wake up from the impending surgery. Birgitte has spent her career as a teacher reaching out to troubled young people. She asks an orderly to turn her bed around, so that the two roommates can talk face to face in their own “little café”.
And so begins an extraordinary friendship, with a heartbeat of hope in today’s frightening world.
